AI is answering. Is it mentioning you?

Generative engine optimization is about being the source AI assistants cite, not the tenth blue link. Here is what the research actually supports, what Google says is a waste of time, and what it costs to hire someone.

The ground moved, and it is measurable

Two numbers explain why this became a service category. Seer Interactive measured organic click-through falling by about 61% on queries where an AI Overview appears. And Gartner projected that traditional search volume would drop by 25% by 2026.

The second number is the one most businesses miss. Analyses through 2026 put the overlap between Google top-ten results and AI-cited sources at roughly 17 to 38%, down from around 70 to 76% a year earlier.

Ranking first no longer means being quoted. Those are now two different competitions.

What the research actually supports

GEO is not folklore. The term comes from a peer-reviewed paper presented at ACM KDD 2024 by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi, benchmarked across 10,000 queries. They measured which edits actually raised visibility in generated answers.

Notice what is missing from that list. No tricks, no markup hacks, no keyword density. The winning edits are the ones that make a passage genuinely quotable: a concrete number, a named source, a sentence that stands on its own.

What Google says you do not need

This is where a lot of GEO services will sell you something you should not buy.

Google published guidance in 2026 on optimizing for its generative AI features. It states that structured data is not required for AI Overviews or AI Mode and that no special schema markup is needed for them. Its myth-busting section explicitly names llms.txt files and content chunking as unnecessary.

Google’s own summary of the discipline is blunt: optimizing for generative AI features is still SEO.

So if a seller’s pitch is built on llms.txt, a schema package, or chunking your content, they are selling tactics the largest generative engine has publicly called unnecessary. That is the single most useful filter you can apply before ordering.

The uncomfortable part: it is mostly not your website

SEO was a first-party game. You changed your own pages. GEO largely is not.

An AirOps analysis of over a billion citations found that roughly 85% of brand mentions in AI search originate from third-party pages rather than brand-owned sites, with brands around 6.5 times more likely to be cited through third parties than through their own domain.

That reframes what you are buying. A gig that only edits your website addresses only a small part of the problem. The higher-value work is getting your business accurately represented in the places AI systems already trust: directories, roundups, review sites, industry publications, and community discussions.

Small traffic, unusually good traffic

Two funnels compared: many visitors converting rarely, and few visitors converting often

Be realistic about volume. Conductor benchmarks put AI referral traffic at around 1% of all website traffic, and a Pew-linked analysis of nearly 69,000 searches found only about 1% of users who see an AI summary click a cited source.

The people who do click behave differently. Seer Interactive measured conversion rates of about 15.9% from ChatGPT and 10.5% from Perplexity, compared with about 1.76% from organic search. Ahrefs found that AI search visitors accounted for 12.1% of signups while making up 0.5% of visitors.

So GEO today is a small, high-intent channel, not a traffic firehose. Anyone promising volume is describing a different internet than the one the data shows.

What it costs

GEO is a new category, and pricing is unsettled, so treat these as orientation rather than benchmarks. Check the live listing before budgeting.

Visibility audit

$100 to $400

Someone runs your brand and buyer questions through several assistants and reports where you appear, where competitors appear instead, and what is being said.

Content optimisation

$300 to $1,000

Rewriting key pages to be extractable: direct answers up front, real statistics, named sources, question-shaped headings.

Ongoing programme

$1,000+ per month

Third-party presence work, monitoring across assistants, and repeated testing. This is where the real leverage sits and where Fiverr Pro sellers operate.

Common questions

GEO is the practice of structuring content and online presence so AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews cite or recommend you when answering relevant questions. The goal is to be part of the answer rather than a link below it. The term comes from a 2024 peer-reviewed paper by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi.

They overlap heavily. Google’s own 2026 guidance says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO, and most practitioners treat GEO as a layer on top of a sound SEO foundation rather than a replacement. The difference is what you optimise for: extractable, citable passages rather than ranking position. A slow site with thin content will not get cited no matter how it is formatted.

The peer-reviewed research measured the largest gains from adding quotations (up to 41%), adding statistics (around 32%), citing sources (around 30%) and improving fluency (around 28%). All four amount to the same thing: making individual passages quotable and verifiable. Notably, none of the winning tactics are technical tricks.

Google says no. Its 2026 documentation states that structured data is not required for AI Overviews or AI Mode and that no special schema markup is needed, and its mythbusting section names llms.txt and content chunking as unnecessary. Other engines may behave differently, but a service built primarily on these tactics is selling something Google has publicly dismissed.

Less than most pitches imply. Benchmarks put AI referral traffic at roughly 1% of total website traffic, and only about 1% of people who see an AI summary click through to a cited source. The value is in quality rather than quantity: measured conversion rates around 15.9% from ChatGPT and 10.5% from Perplexity, against roughly 1.76% for organic search.

Technical fixes such as crawler access can register within weeks as engines re-crawl, but authority and corroboration signals build over months. Three to six months of consistent work is the common expectation. Anyone promising citations in weeks is either lucky or describing something other than durable visibility.

Start by finding out where you stand

Ask three assistants the questions your customers would ask, and write down who gets named. That costs nothing and tells you whether you need this at all.
