What "Source Files" Actually Means, and Why You Should Always Ask

Six months after you paid for the logo, you need a larger version for a trade show banner. You open the folder and find a PNG. When blown up, the edges become soft and pixelated, and there is nothing you can do about it because you have a photograph of your logo rather than the logo itself.
This is the most common and most avoidable regret in buying creative work. The fix costs nothing at the time and is nearly impossible to arrange afterward.
The difference in one line
A source file is the original editable project the work was built in. An export is a flattened picture of the result.
You can view an export. You cannot take it apart, change a color, move an element, or scale it without loss. Everything that made the work adjustable lives in the source file, and if you do not have it, every future change means paying someone to rebuild it from a screenshot.
What counts as source, by type of work
Logos and vector artwork. The vector file is typically in AI, EPS, or SVG format. On Fiverr, these are commonly bundled together, and many listings advertise AI, EPS, PDF, and SVG alongside high-resolution PNG and JPG. Vector scales to any size without degrading, which is the whole point.
Layered graphics and photo work. The layered .PSD or .INDD file is for layout work. Note that this is often an extra charge rather than included; several listings state plainly that a PSD file comes with the top package and must be added to cheaper ones.
Video and motion. The project file, such as a Premiere or After Effects project, plus the assets it references. A project file without its linked footage, fonts, and audio opens as a wall of missing-media errors, so ask for the folder rather than the single file.
Websites and apps. The repository or the full codebase, plus build instructions. For design-stage work, editable access to the Figma file rather than exported images.
Audio. The multitrack session and the individual stems, not just the mixed-down MP3.
Fonts are the trap inside the trap
A layered file is only editable if you can open it as intended, and that depends on having the fonts. Font licenses frequently do not transfer from the designer to you, which means a .PSD can arrive technically complete and still substitute every headline the moment you open it.
Ask which fonts were used and whether the license covers you. For a logo specifically, the standard fix is converting letterforms to outlines, which turns type into artwork and removes the dependency. It solves the logo. It does not solve the rest of your brand materials.
Ask before the order closes
Timing decides this. While the order is open, you have to accept or reject the delivery, and the seller’s rating is at stake. Once it is complete, you are asking a stranger for a favor.
Check the gig description first, because source files are frequently sold as a separate extra rather than included. If it is an extra, buy it. It is almost always cheaper than not having it later.
What to send, word for word
Copy this into the order chat before you approve anything:
Before I mark this complete, could you send the editable source files along with the final exports? Also, which fonts did you use, and are they licensed for my commercial use?
It is two sentences; it is entirely reasonable, and a professional seller will not blink at it. Hesitation is itself informative.
Store them where you will find them
Source files are only useful if you can locate them in two years. Put them somewhere other than your email; name the folder after the project, and keep the font list in a text file alongside them.
